Bocce is one of the friendliest sports, but for beginning bocce players it can still be a little intimidating. The two main areas most beginner bocce ball players are uncertain about are bocce attire and bocce delivery techniques.
Bocce Dress Tips
In general, bocce ball clothing should be comfortable and allow free movement. If playing bocce outdoors, wear colors and fabrics appropriate to the season. Bocce ball shoes should have non-scuff bottoms to avoid damaging the playing surface. Open-toed sandals are usually not appropriate bocce ball shoes as a dropped ball could cause injury.
Bocce Ball Practice Drills
One of the best bocce ball tips you can follow to become a rapidly improved player is practice, practice, practice. Bowling enthusiasts will probably have an easier time catching on to bocce's delivery techniques, but for non-bowlers, there are a few simple practice drills that can bridge the experience gap.
The United States Bocce Federation recommends bocce practice drills that focus on direction, distance, and accuracy. With an open court and a few bocce balls, try your hand at these bocce skill building challenges (keeping best out of 10 scores can make it more fun):
- To improve your bocce bowl direction, chalk two lines down the court or set up two parallel rows of objects and see if you can stick to that bowling path.
- To improve your bocce bowl distance, make two parallel sideways lines at the end of the court and try to stop the ball between them.
- To improve your bocce bowl accuracy, create a target circle at the end of the court and see how many times you can hit its center.
