Bocce Courts

The great thing about bocce is that it can be played on any level surface by anyone willing to give it a try. It can either be played on an official bocce court surface or on non-court surfaces such as grass, dirt, sand, or even gravel.

Where can I play bocce?

Official court surface--When bocce is played on an official court surface, the game has rigid boundaries (the four sides of the court) and tends to follow stricter rules.
Backyard Bocce -- When bocce is played on a non-court surface, it is often called "Backyard Bocce". This type of bocce can be played anywhere - in parks, at the beach, at a campsite, on your lawn, or even on your driveway.

Bocce Courts

Bocce courts are typically unique in design and construction when compared to each other. Choice of building materials and playing surfaces and even lengths and widths of bocce courts may vary. Typically, bocce courts are approximately 20 to 30 meters in length and approximately 2.5 to 4 meters wide. The court has wooden boards of approximately 15 centimeters in height surrounding it.

If you are a serious bocce player, you may want to consider building your own bocce court. When building a bocce court the primary consideration should be the playing surface. You can build a court with a dirt surface; however, using a premium surface such as a bulk oyster blend will have the advantages of fast play, minimal bounce, and easy maintenance.

Besides the playing surface, there are many other important details to consider when building a bocce court:

Do you intend to use the back walls for rebounding?
Will you need bocce ball racks?
Will you want a bocce score tower?
Do you want lights so you can play at night?
Do you want to cover your court so you can play in inclement weather?

To help examine the details, you may want to hire a designer and builder to construct your bocce court. However, if cost is a consideration, there are now bocce court kits available, as well as instructions 'how to' CDs, giving you step-by-step instructions to build your own bocce court.
